One day, as fable goes, a lonely traveler becomes the unlucky puppet in contest of strength between the Wind and the Sun. He becomes the victim of the Wind’s harsh blows and the Sun’s suffocating heat until a victor is declared between the two heavily bodies.
But who was the traveler? And where was he going?
His destination takes us into the world created by the contest between the Wind and the Sun. Featuring Native American, European, and South American stories, Tales from the Wind and the Sun is a multi-cultural journey to see just how far the Wind and the Sun go to find out who is stronger.
Developed by Diego Carvajal and Jon Levin Tales from the Wind and the Sun is a family show intended to expose different disciplines of art through stories from around the world. It is a collaboration between puppets of all shapes and sizes ranging from a larger than life dragon, to shadow puppets, to subtle but expressive tabletop puppets and the talents of Diego Carvajal, Billy Dutton, Rachel Fine, Jesse Garrison, Shaundra Dutton, and Marielle Solan. Also featuring original music by Jonah Bloch-Johnson and an original piece by writer Corina Bardoff.
Stories are like the wind’s breath and the sun’s heat. Although coming from far away, they reach us here at home. What better place to receive these world stories then in the culturally rich East Village? Tales from the Wind and the Sun is a quintessential East Village show in what the New York Times calls a “quintessentially East Village theater”
